Scripted or rule-based bots are the simplest form of chatbots.

These chatbots operate based on a set of rules. These rules often take the form of a decision tree or “swim lanes.”

A step above rule-based chatbots are chatbots that recognize user intent to match questions. People often refer to these bots as "conversational chatbots."

They use Natural Language Processing (NLP) to understand the user's intent behind a query. Instead of following rigid rules, the bot determines what the user is asking by analyzing the keywords, sentence structure, and sentiment. It then matches the user's question to a predefined set of questions and corresponding answers.

Question-matching chatbots can handle a broader range of queries relative to rule-based chatbots. They can, however, still struggle with complex questions. In addition, they require a large list of predefined questions and answers. Sometimes, they may also require many different ways of writing the same question.

NLP engines aren't necessary in rule-based AI chatbots. With rule-based AI chatbots, the user is constrained to specific responses, i.e., “Select one of the following options.” As such, processing user intent and context is unnecessary because the user's allowed actions are predetermined.

Natural Language Processing (NLP)


Tokenization is the process of breaking down a sentence into individual words or phrases called tokens. This step serves as the basis for understanding the syntax and semantics of the user input.

Entity Recognition

Entity recognition identifies specific categories of words or phrases within the user's input, such as names, dates, products, or locations. Recognizing entities enables the chatbot to understand what the user is referring to and help it generate a more accurate response. With generative AI chatbots, the underlying LLM does entity recognition.

In rule-based chatbots, the response is typically just the next predetermined step in the decision tree or the swim lane.

Question-matching bots respond based on how confident they are that the user's question matches a pre-set question.

  1. The system shows the predefined answer and/or a link to the predefined answer in high confidence situations.
  2. In lower confidence situations, the system responds, "I think you were asking the following question." It then shows the answer(s) corresponding to that question.
  3. In very low confidence situations, the system responds, "I'm sorry, I wasn't able to understand your question. Please try again."

With generative AI chatbots, the LLM provides a highly tailored response to the user's question. The response doesn't need to be pre-defined. The LLM, using training knowledge, can write an original response.

LLMs respond to any prompt or question. LLMs can “hallucinate” or seemingly make up random facts, especially when training knowledge is missing. Poor generative AI chatbots will hallucinate frequently.

Leading generative AI chatbots will not hallucinate. When knowledge is missing, they should simply indicate that they weren't able to find a relevant answer.
